Adventures in the Wilderness; or, Camp-life in the Adirondacks by W. H. H. Murray
It’s the book that launched a thousand guideboats! William Henry Harrison (aka “Adirondack”) Murray published his fame-making title in 1869, inspiring thousands of vacationers – who came to be known as “Murray’s Fools – to try their luck at camping and tramping through the Adirondack wilds. Part guidebook, part tall tale, Adventures gives a very colorful account of Murray’s own exploits through this region. Join us for this inaugural meeting of the Rustic Readers Book Club to see why we’re still talking about this book more than 150 years later!

An American Tragedy by Theodore Dreiser
Ripped from the turn-of-the-century headlines, this classic of American literature is based on the real-life murder of Grace Brown by her beau, Chester Gillette, during their stay at the Hotel Glenmore on Big Moose Lake in 1906. Gillette’s trial in Herkimer County drew national attention, and Dreiser’s adaptation of the true crime story spawned a cascade of adaptions through the years, including the 1951 Elizabeth Taylor film, A Place in the Sun. This lengthy novel is a door-stopper, but it’s got enough meat on its bones to get you through the cold winter months.
