This is the final chapter of a 10-chapter novella by teenager Arden Calhoun. We’ll publish more installments of this story in weeks to come.

The group wasn’t even all the way back on campus when they heard cheering. The entire school was outside waiting for them when they got back.

“Way to go!” someone called.

“You saved my best friend!” another voice cried out.

“You saved all of us!”

“Johanna! Johanna! Johanna!” A chant broke out as they lifted her off the ground. Then she quieted them.

“I couldn’t have done it without all of you,” she said, gesturing to everyone, particularly those who she had talked to first, “Thank you for being so welcoming. Being different can be hard, but you made me feel right at home here. I will always be grateful.” The crowd broke out in cheers again, and Johanna poofed into a dragon and drew a moose, the school’s mascot, in the sky with smoke before landing and turning human again. It was a great day.

And they all lived happily ever after.
