Playing with Story Ideas: A Hands-On Workshop

Tuesday, February 9, 2021 at 7:00pm

Cost: Sliding scale $5-20

What kinds of stories do you love? What settings, characters, or situations have always stuck to you in some way? This workshop will focus on mining the depths of those fascinations and using them to generate a new idea (or ideas) based on your own creative obsessions.  Participants will be guided through a multi-step exercise aimed at identifying favored story elements; looking at how and why they “hack into your brain” (as they say on the Writing Excuses podcast), and then using that information to develop and launch a wholly new story concept. The workshop will end with a brief free write based on your idea, along with an option to share work and discuss the process. Time length: 1 hour.

Perfect for: emerging and established writers seeking inspiration.

Persistence and Optimism in Writing: How to Have Both

Discussion and Q&A

Tuesday, March 23, 2021 at 7:00pm

Cost: Sliding scale $5-20

Why are we, as writers, so often reluctant to dive into the creative process? What is this odd, but also widely shared fear of the thing we ostensibly most love to do? And furthermore, how can we work around this resistance when it rears its unwelcome head? This discussion and Q&A with Chris Tebbetts focuses on fear as it relates to the creative process, along with other impediments to creative productivity, as well as the things we can do to always (yes, always) move that project forward when we’re feeling stuck. Time length: 1 hour.

Perfect for: emerging and established writers seeking tools for productivity and creativity.
