The Constitution of the United States
We, the people, in order to form a perfect union,
promote general welfare, secure the blessings
of liberty to ourselves and posterity… July 4, 1776
Where are we today? Who are we the people?
The very conservative right verses
extra liberal left. What about the middle?
The insiders verses the outsiders?
Fighting, snarling, hearing turned off,
stamping of feet, rude interruptions.
How do, we the people, traverse the
rocky road ahead? Is there room for all?
The founding fathers wanted a perfect union.
Promote general welfare. Secure the
blessings of liberty to ourselves and
posterity. Their time was chaotic and unsure.
They worked hard to find middle ground.
Not everyone got their way. What they had then,
we don’t today, respect for one another and a
commitment to work together for the common good.
Today we watch dysfunctionality. Toxic air
blowing through the halls of congress.
Elected officials behave as fighting
children, yelling screaming, disrespecting each other.
Civility, please return! Come back
calm voice of reason. We must stand
and demand more from our elected
officials representing, WE The People.
