My mother came into my bedroom, kissed me softly on the cheek.
“Good morning, Sweetheart. Time to get up. I have your clothes for today. They are warm and toasty for you if you get dressed right away. I’m making waffles for breakfast, so don’t wait.”
I woke up from that dream. The room was freezing cold, but I was used to that. The cup with water beside my bed was frozen solid. That was normal. What was not normal this morning was the crunching sound as I moved under the several layers of blankets. Peeking over the top, I saw an inch of snow on my bed! That was a surprise!!
I stood on my dirty clothes that I’d deliberately put on the floor the night before. Those clothes were a bit of protection for my bare feet from the cold wood floor. I quickly dressed and brushed the snow off my bed into the tin wastebasket so it would not soak my blankets if my room got that warm during the day. It might not, there was no heat upstairs. Then I hurried down to do my chores in the barn before eating a bowl of cold cereal before running to catch the school bus It would not wait very long for me if I was late.
Note: I never had that dream. If I had, I knew it would never come true. My mother was not like that. The rest was a normal winter morning – except for the snow on my bed. That was a surprise!
