I was visiting my Adirondack friends at their winter home in Arden, DE, and I was with the kids while their mom got ready to go out to a fancy party. I suggested to the 6 yr-old that we play a joke on her mom by hiding one of mom’s snazzy high-heel shoes behind a family photo on the bookcase, and because Emily thought it funny we did. I said goodbye, and drove back to my home. In a while the phone rang, and it was the mom reaming me out because Emily couldn’t remember where we’d hidden mom’s shoe and they’d torn the place apart looking for it. When I appealed to my grandmother for sympathy, saying it was just a practical joke, to which she replied, a practical joke should be funny to all parties involved. Lesson learned!
