Oh DeRuyter Lake;
you are the biggest water bowl
I have ever seen.
You sparkle.
You move.
You absolutely refuse
to be fully fetched.
I run.
You wave.
I bark at you
for existing so loudly.
You smell like fish and freedom
and something mysterious
I am not allowed to roll in
(but will try anyway).
Your docks are launchpads.
Your sticks are legendary.
Your mud is art.
When the sun melts into you,
I sit.
Panting, proud, damp,
certain I have conquered you.
Tomorrow,
we do it again.

  1. To a very articulate dog who wrote a very charming poem. Your use of figurative language and sensory images really work. Your human obviously takes great joy in bringing you to the lake.Have fun!
