My plans for a summer of relaxation?
Deck-sitting, hummingbird watching,
swims in Long Lake, June through September.
That was the plan until Seamus and Fiona,
two throw-away kittens from NYC, entered our lives
on Independence Day.
Eleven weeks old, Fiona lacking a hind paw
rescued at 4 weeks while crossing a street in Queens
and when placed in a shelter she met and fell in love with Seamus.
A few weeks older and sick with conjunctivitis Seamus shared her love and his illness with
Fiona.
We had lost our two cats, Sahara and Shimmer,
from old age last December, a tuxedo and tabby reincarnated into Seamus, our new tabby and
Fiona, our new tuxedo.
We were hopelessly smitten when shown their photo.
She was 3 pounds, he, all of 5, both with pus eyes.
She, affectionate, accepting of eye medication.
He wouldn’t let us touch him.
Hiding, chasing, hiding, chasing, No medication for him.
Their eye infections blossomed into systemic infections.
104 fevers, 4 Vet visits, four antibiotic injections
brought us into August, exhausted.
Happy to report they are thriving as we approach Labor Day very much in love with each other.
Fiona is a powerhouse, supervising and assisting her brother in their litter box.
Seamus adores his sister, but we, are to only look but
No touching allowed.
My plan for next summer?
Deck-sitting,hummingbird-watching, luxurious swims
with a hope to have won over Seamus.
Maybe, just maybe, he will welcome our touch along with
Our devoted love.
