Story Publishing Camp (Grades 5-8)

Location: Adirondack Center for Writing, 15 Broadway, Saranac Lake, NY
Write, design, and print your own original book
(5 days, 15 hours class time)
Instructor: Francesca Padilla
Ages: Children in Grades 5-8
Cost: $100 – $250 (Sliding Scale, pay what you can)
Goal: Students will write and edit their own creative writing pieces and design original books for distribution.
Culminating event: Students will have the chance to “launch” their book, sign copies, and distribute them to the public at the Adirondack Family Book Festival on Saturday, April 19 at John Brown Farm in Lake Placid, NY.
Students in Adirondack Center for Writing’s week-long Story Publishing Camp will explore the fundamentals of narrative (characters, plot, setting, and more) and draft an original multi-page creative writing piece with the help of YA author Francesca Padilla. Students will then learn the technical skills to produce polished works of prose as well as design, lay-out, print, copy, and bind their own original book. Campers’ hard work will be celebrated on Saturday, August 19 at the Adirondack Family Book Festival at John Brown Farm in Lake Placid, NY.
Francesca Padilla is a queer Dominican-American fiction writer born and raised in New York City and living in Rochester, NY. Her debut novel What’s Coming to Me (Soho Teen, 2022) has been recognized as a Junior Library Guild selection and a Best Teen/YA Book of 2022 by Kirkus Reviews and School Library Journal.
