Three hundred dwellings in one building
Twenty apartments per floor
Most keep to themselves
People rushing in and out from their daily chores.

Elevator staring,
People shy or afraid to say hello
Individual versus us
Timid to speak, or just plain mellow.

Is it the city’s hustle
Which causes people to rush in and close their doors?
Or is it the sanctuary of their apartments
Where they feel safe at their core.

Community building versus isolation,
What would you prefer?
People protective of their homestead
Would that be a lure?

I’m not afraid to say hello
To my fellow apartment residents
I’m not even on our Co-op Board,
But perhaps I should run for our Co-Op President?

Let’s change the culture
And create a friendlier place
Let’s strive for synergies and collaboration
No matter what background or race.

Knowledge sharing is key
And I’ll continue to say hello
Whether they think I am crazy
But not lifeless like jello.
