The Adirondack Center for Writing has hosted classes, workshops, readings, and other events for all ages since our founding.

Check our events calendar for all upcoming classes, readings, story slams, and workshops.

In addition to one-off events, classes, and workshops, we also host a variety of ongoing series:

A Writing Workshop for Everyone – See upcoming

This every-other-month, drop-in writing workshop will get you writing, regardless of your experience level or genre. Led by a guest instructor or ACW staff, you’ll be exposed to different approaches to creative writing, get some new writing done, and have the chance to share with a supportive group of fellow writers. Beginners are welcome, and experienced writers will discover new directions for their projects.

Barkreaders: Open Mic + Featured Reading – See upcoming

Where can you discover new North Country writers and also share some work of your own? Barkreaders takes place every other month here at ACW in Saranac Lake, NY. Each reading will include an open mic and feature a North Country author presenting a recent book publication. Join us at 7 PM on the third Wednesday of January, March, May, July, September, and November.

Friday Night Writes – See upcoming

We know how it goes. The week gets busy, so your writing time gets pushed to the weekend. Then, the weekend gets away from you—and suddenly it’s Monday again. That’s why we’re kicking off each first Friday with a happy hour of writing here at ACW from 3 – 7 PM. Friday Night Writes is your space to decompress, connect, and write with a community of other creatives in a warm, inviting environment. Sleep in an extra hour on Saturday because you got your writing done the night before.

Use this monthly, drop-in writing session the way that suits you:

  • Write pages on that project you’ve been chipping away at
  • Use our writing prompts and the month’s theme to jumpstart a new piece
  • Find resources and discover publishing opportunities
  • Meet a friend here to exchange feedback
  • Connect with other local creatives and grow your community

These events will be casual yet productive. We’ll provide prompts, and other helpful materials. Best of all, it’s free (donations appreciated)! So, even if you’re brand new to writing or not sure whether to call yourself a “writer”, you too belong here at Friday Night Writes.

Howl Story Slam – See upcoming

It’s a live, spirited storytelling competition. Storytellers (anyone can sign up!) take the stage to tell a true story in under 5 minutes. Judges (2-3 audience members) score the stories, and at the end of the night, a winner is announced. All winners are invited to our annual Grand Slam at the end of the year. Learn more about Howl Story Slam here.
