He’d never lived up to even one of his previous New Year’s resolutions. He’d never, as best he could recall, even made it as far as his February birthday without granting himself pardon for his failure to do so. This year, he told himself, things were going to be different.

He was having trouble coming up with a reasonable, achievable, resolution.

He decided, only moments before midnight, that he would never promise himself anything again. Never.

Almost exactly one year later, he patted himself on the back and resolved to go another unfettered year.

Dammit.
